Gratitude can make you look better
We have all seen the motivational posts on social media and heard celebrities such as John Legend, Jenifer Lopez and Denzel Washington regularly expressing gratitude when talking about their lives and their success. Sure, it's easy for them to be thankful, they are living their dream lives, but what about the rest of us who are still on the path to our dreams coming true? What can gratitude do for us? Well, for one it can make us look better!
I am sure you have all noticed a recent trend of the proclamation of gratitude. We have all seen the motivational posts on social media and heard celebrities such as John Legend, Jenifer Lopez and Denzel Washington regularly expressing gratitude when talking about their lives and their success. Sure, it's easy for them to be thankful, they are living their dream lives, but what about the rest of us who are still on the path to our dreams coming true? What can gratitude do for us? Well, for one it can make us look better! There are multitudes of benefits of practicing gratitude both physiological and psychological and there have been many studies completed proving those benefits. However, being a fashion and inner confidence blog we would like to concentrate on the beauty benefits. But let’s start by explaining what ‘practicing gratitude’ really means. Practicing gratitude entails taking time out every day to think about the positive things in our lives that we are grateful for. This is a very conscious action, at least at the start, to dedicate time to focus our thoughts and attention on all the good things that we have and experience in our daily lives. We all lead such busy lives these days, from the moment we wake up till the moment we go to sleep it’s all go go go. We eat while we work, we talk while we walk, we even watch TV while catching up on social media so taking time to focus on just one thing can take some effort but according to scientist, celebrities and all the yogis in the world- it is so worth it! So how does this practice of gratitude can make us look good?
Gratitude makes your skin glow. The whole bases for practicing gratitude is focusing on the positive. Positive thoughts lead to a feeling of happiness. It’s no secret that happy people glow. Just look at brides and newly expectant women- the surge of happiness hormones translate in healthier and younger looking skin.
Gratitude helps you sleep better. If you practice gratitude before you go to bed you will end your day on a positive note. In addition, positive thoughts reduce stress hence letting you sleep better. Not only the quality of your sleep will improve but probably quantity will increase too. Just think about it, how often do you lay in bed worrying about something, not able to go to sleep? If you concentrate on the good things that happened that day, you will reduce stress and tension in your body helping you to fall asleep much quicker and we all know the benefits of beauty sleep!
Gratitude makes us healthier. Studies have shown that positive people have a much stronger immune system. Happiness hormones aid in fighting inflations while stress hormones tear our immune system apart. It goes without saying that healthy glow and complexion is much more attractive then greyish sickly complexion and stress wrinkles!
Gratitude makes us more confident. I can’t think of anything more attractive than a happy confident woman! Having a positive outlook on life increases our self-esteem and turn improves our confidence. If we take time to celebrate our achievements (big and small) instead of beating ourselves up about every little failure we will be so much happier, much more inspired to take on new challenges and much more confident in ourselves.
Gratitude can help us get fitter. Happy people make better choices. If you are feeling more positive you are less likely to stress eat. Positive people have more energy and therefore do not rely on chocolate to give them energy boost in the afternoons. If you are feeling happier and more confident you are more likely to make better choices for yourself and not look for instant gratification in copious amounts of wine and junk food.
Now that we discussed all the ways gratitude can make us look better, let’s talk about easy ways to start practicing it
Keep a gratitude journal. As mentioned above finishing your day with thoughts of gratitude will help you sleep better, in turn, making you healthier and happier. Keep a notebook beside your bed and make sure you take the time to write three to five things you are grateful for every single day. It is also a good idea to start your day with positive thoughts. If you don’t have time to sit and write in your journal in the morning you could go through the list you have written while you are brushing your teeth. If you prefer to keep your list more private, Notes app on your smartphone is a good way to record all the things you are grateful for. The benefit of that is that it will always by your side so if you ever feel low you can whip it out, read through your list and instantly feel better- it’s a handy proof that things aren’t as bad as they might seem
Celebrate achievements big and small! Instead of downplaying all the things you do well with phrases such as ‘Oh it’s nothing” or “No need to thank me” or “It was actually very easy. Anyone can do it” try and celebrate jobs well done. Have a coffee or a glass of wine to celebrate a completed task, meet with your friend and share a piece of good news. Share your good news on social media and spread some happiness. If you are worried that people will think that you are boating- don’t! Happy positive people will congratulate you and miserable ones will ignore you. And if you do receive a negative comment send them a link to this blog!
Give compliments! A great way to focus on the positive during the day is to look for opportunities to compliment people around you. Instead of judging your colleagues find something positive to say. Not only will you start seeing more positive and beautiful things around you but you will spread the joy and there is no better accessory than a genuine smile
